Cultural Arts:  Helping Artists Emerge

Our Chamber has one festival a year that we use for revenue for projects for the Chamber. We have been doing it for 8 years and we were looking for a way to increase the art that was submitted to display by local artists. There are lacking in opportunities for people to experience art in our community.  I contacted a local art teacher from our school system and asked if she would start a monthly class and teach people how to paint.  Our hopes were that people would start painting, gain an interest and artists would emerge.   Over the past 5 years, submissions to the festival did not increase and we have lost that portion of the festival but participants to the class have grown.  Now I myself teach the class, saving money that we paid the teacher and we use it as a non-dues revenue generator. It gives us another after-hours type event.  One of the local senior living facilities sponsors us often and enjoys hosting a group of people in to see their beautiful facility that otherwise would not have that chance.  I have partnered with a local campground and held classes in their recreation center and have worked with many organizations on fundraisers that help us all.
