After great discussion, the ICEA leadership has decided to change up this year's Annual Conference, originally scheduled for June 10-12. There were several concerns leading to this decision, the top reasons being: #1. the unknown on when it would be safe for group gatherings & travel to resume; #2 what message will chamber professionals give to their business community if we postponed the full conference to the fall when our businesses will need the chamber leaders at home on the front line more than ever, and; #3. would Chambers be in a financial position to fully send staff to a multi-day event this year and how best can we provide professional development for the local chambers during the COVID pandemic?
The bright side of this news is we will instead focus on three one-day regional sessions to be held in late July/early August, 2020. One session in Northern Indiana; one in Central Indiana; one in Southern Indiana with the ability for any Chamber professional to attend any of the sessions that fits his/her schedule. The Central session will be at the Embassy Suites in Plainfield which was to be the 2020 conference host site location and we will encourage peers who want a mini-conference atmosphere to target the Central Indiana gathering, arriving the day prior to the training for dinner and peer mentoring. So literally instead of potentially putting our members in harm by gathering for a large conference like we would traditionally offer, ICEA will be taking conference content to the members in smaller group settings hosted regionally in our state. The focus of the regional gatherings will be on economic recovery. We are negotiating with a nationally-recognized expert who wants to roll out a recovery session first in Indiana. Taking conference to our members will lower the expense for your participation. Yes, 2020 will be different, however we have high hopes that this too shall pass and we will come out of this stronger than many may anticipate. Taking conference to our members will lower the expense for participation with a reduced registration and no overnight required for most attendees. Details for the regional workshops will be rolled out soon, once we have a good idea of when it will be deemed safe to gather again.
